I wrote my very first piano composition in a practice room in the basement of Rosse Hall, the building that housed the music department of Kenyon College when I was a student there. I was practicing the piano and became so frustrated with all the mistakes I was making that I began playing the main chords of the pieces as loudly as I possibly could up and down the piano. Somehow, somewhere in the midst of all those notes, I heard the melody of my first piece. I stopped my tantrum and began composing. And the rest is...music, sweet, sweet, music.
